Fed: Downer says Iraq bombing a tragedy
Foreign Affairs Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says Friday's car bombing in Iraq, whichkilled up to 87 people, is a tragedy.
And opposition foreign affairs spokesman KEVIN RUDD has warned that Iraq could becomeanother Vietnam unless more is done to improve the security situation.
Iraq's top Shi'ite Muslim political leader, Ayatollah MOHAMMAD BAQER AL-HAKIM was killedin the bombing outside the Tomb of Ali in the Iraqi city of Najaf.
Mr DOWNER says it's not clear who's responsible, but whichever way you look at it,the bombing is a tragedy.
Mr RUDD says it brings into focus the challenge of maintaining domestic security in Iraq.
He says Australia was one of the three powers which went to war in Iraq to depose theformer government, so it has a responsibility to maintain law and order.
