Fed: Brian Kennedy reappointed to National Gallery

The federal government says National Gallery of Australia director BRIAN KENNEDY will
spend another two years in the nation's top arts job.

Dr KENNEDY's future has for months been the subject of controversy since it emerged
he might become director of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, in his homeland.

His five-year contract was due to expire in August next year but Arts Minister RICHARD
ALSTON says the government has decided to take the option of another two years.

NGA council chair HAROLD MITCHELL has also been reappointed for three years.

Dr KENNEDY'S reign at the gallery has included exhibitions of The Book of Kells, works
by FRIDA KAHLO and CLAUDE MONET, and the purchase of controversial paintings such as LUCIAN
FREUD's $8 million After Cezanne.
